Whether you are just getting started or have been teaching for years your personal yoga practice is the most important thing in any yoga teacher’s life. While a personal practice is incredibly important, it is often the first thing that slips from every yoga teacher’s life.

A personal practice is incredibly important as it is where you maintain your base level of skills and connect to the reason you teach. Taking the time to yourself is useful for so many things and can help you become an excellent teacher.

Unfortunately, as teachers we often let our personal practice slip for any number of reasons. Whether you are experiencing an injury or are lacking in inspiration or motivation, it is vitally important that you keep up with your personal practice. As a teacher, we only have the ability to teach what we know, which means that we have to practice in order to be a better teacher.

Here are 7 tips to stay inspired in your personal yoga practice.

1
Go to Class

This may seem silly but attending class as a student can inspire you to try new things in your personal practice. Hearing how another teacher frames a position or a quote may inspire you to approach your personal practice from a new angle.

2
Dedicate Time Every day

You have the great fortune of being able to set your own schedule as a teacher. Aside from subbing a class or two, your weekly schedule is fairly set. When you have a dedicated time to practice scheduled every day you will be more likely to stick to it. Committing to your personal practice every day doesn’t mean that you have to complete a full practice, it simply allows you the space you need in your day to commit to your practice.

3
Get Uncomfortable

If you feel your personal practice is getting stale, push your comfort zone a bit. As a yoga teacher, you push your students to do things on their mat they may find impossible, so why not do the same for yourself. Try out that pose or series of postures that you have been struggling with.

4
Try A Non-Yoga Class

Go check out a different type of fitness class. Whether you go to Barre, boxing, or a HIIT class, you will find something that you can bring onto the mat. Moving your body in a new way will help liven up your practice. Moves found in other classes can be incorporated into your personal practice and the added strength you gain will help you pull off some trickier transitions.

5
Invest In Your Craft

Training is essential for a broad knowledge base. Attending Yoga training and workshops will give you the guidance and instruction you need to advance as a teacher. As you learn new skills, you will be able to incorporate them first into your personal practice and then into your classes.

6
Take Your Yoga Off The Mat

As a yoga teacher, it is all too common to repeat the same phrases, quotes and pieces of dharma. All of that is nothing if you don’t practice what you preach. Get out into the world and volunteer your time for a charity you are passionate about. You could also write gratitude letters to friends or family. These experiences will make you feel good and will have a positive impact on your personal practice.

7
Don’t Be Afraid To Just Meditate

Sometimes no matter how much you know you need to practice you just can’t. This is when the other limbs of yoga come in handy. Meditation can help you to not only calm your mind but to get to the root of your problems.

No matter how much time you have or how little you are inspired to hit your mat it is important to keep up your personal practice. Being a yoga teacher can be as draining as it is fulfilling, but a strong personal practice will keep you healthy and happy.

Over 500 million people use Instagram every day. As a lightweight and image-driven interface, Instagram’s meteoric rise in popularity is evidence of a shift in the way teens and adults are connecting with brands and thought leaders. In today’s hectic world, social media users prefer a balance between information and simplicity. Instagram delivers that balance, enabling users to connect with the people and causes they love through dazzling images, videos, and sparse text—all from the convenience of their smartphone.

Fitness is among the most popular industries taking advantage of the massive audience on Instagram, ranking among the 75 most-used media tags worldwide. Happy, smile, beautiful, and fun are also on that list, demonstrating the overall positive vibes held by most users. Not surprisingly, posts about yoga, meditation, and mindfulness are a perfect fit for this social media audience.

Now, yoga professionals can take advantage of a new feature offered by Instagram: Instagram Stories. With the help of this new function, yoga instructors, studios, and students have the ability to share their experiences with fun, informative, and thought provoking posts. In addition to spreading the ideals and practice of yoga, Instagram Stories presents a powerful opportunity for savvy instructors to build and nurture student relationships like never before.

1
YOGA AND INSTAGRAM STORIES: HOW IT WORKS

Instagram Stories offer a variety of features that make it easier for students to keep in touch with instructors and studios. Stories can be composed of a series of photos, videos, and even live streaming video. Best of all, fresh new Stories are showcased along a horizontal bar at the top of every user’s home feed, making it easier for yoga instructors to inform and entertain students with fresh content. Here’s how it works:

  • Once logged-in, tap the Your Story icon at the top of your home feed, located at the far left side of the Stories section. Alternatively, swipe left on your news feed to smoothly jump into Stories mode.
  • Capture media by a) tapping the circle button to snap a picture, or b) holding the circle video to record a video.
  • Click Done.
  • Next, click Add Your Story to share the media. If you like, you can also save the media to your phone and re-post it to your website or other social media accounts.
  • Repeat steps 1-5 to keep adding new photos and videos to your Story, and they will play in succession whenever a user clicks on your Story icon.
  • At the end of the day, your Story will disappear.

Instagram Stories
Now, let’s take a closer look at available media formats:

  • Photos: Upload still photos to your Story by clicking the circle button (step 2 above). Then, take advantage of Instagram’s built-in media editor by adding filters, text, and sketches to your post.
  • Videos: Record a video by clicking and holding the circle button (step 2 above). To add effects to your video, like filters, swipe across it to pull up the video editor.
  • Live video: Just beneath the circle button, you will notice an option titled Live. Click on that option to begin your broadcast, and your Followers will see a live… notification embedded within your Stories icon. Once your broadcast is over, your video will disappear from Instagram.
  • Boomerang: Beneath the circle button, there’s also an option called Boomerang. This mode lets you record a short GIF-like video, which can be a creative way to showcase unique content (see Additional Tips and Tricks below!)
  • Hands-free video: To the right of the Boomerang option, there’s a final recording mode called Hands-Free. As the name suggests, this mode allows you to record video without having to hold down the circle button.
2
5 WAYS TO CREATE STORIES FOR INSTAGRAM YOGA MARKETING

Marketing and advertising largely rely on making customers understand that a particular product or service fulfills a need. For many yoga students, that need is transformation. Every day, yogis of all ages unroll their mats and turn off their phones simply because they desire the time and space to transform.

To build a following—both digitally and in the real world—instructors must understand this need and create unique content that helps to fulfill it. In doing so, genuine relationships can be built, nurtured, and grown in a way that benefits both student and instructor. Below are just a few examples of how savvy instructors can nurture those kinds of mutually beneficial relationships.

3
Meditations from the Mat

Themes are one of the greatest elements of in-studio classes. Instructors who can thoughtfully weave mantras, anecdotes, and visualization exercises into classes have the power to elevate their students into higher levels of physical performance and emotional clarity. Take these meditations from the mat and use them to create candid Instagram Stories. Think of it as a class-in-a-stream; for the students who can’t make it to the studio, what words could you share to keep them curious, thoughtful, and inspired throughout the day? Like classes, these meditations are best themed according to day of the week, season, holiday, or other significant event.

4
Posture Demonstration

Most students aspire to improve certain postures. Whether perfecting alignment in Triangle pose or working toward the ever-elusive handstand, yogis always love instructional content that promises to improve their practice. Instagram Stories provides the perfect platform to deliver such content, enabling instructors to address critical factors when transitioning in-and-out of popular postures.

5
Studio Tour

What makes your studio unique? Maybe you offer early morning classes, showers, and pristine locker rooms to help young professionals find flow on weekday mornings. Or, perhaps you are a quiet studio with a tranquil ambience where students are always greeted by warm and smiling faces. Take time to consider what students (and employees!) love most about your space, and post a studio tour to Instagram Stories that highlights all that makes you unique.

6
Share Student Feedback

Few things trigger a decision to purchase faster than positive reviews and testimonials. With Instagram Stories, yoga instructors and studios have the ability to add a face and personality to positive reviews by sharing student feedback on classes and workshops. Of course, video testimonials don’t have to be forced, awkward, or uncomfortable. Often times, sharing photos and videos of smiling faces with the occasional “Loved it!” soundbite will do more than a lengthy paragraph of praise. If students want to share feedback but prefer not to be recorded, ask if they might consider taking a photo instead. Using the Stories text feature, you can then add a caption that expresses their feedback. Best of all, you can also take advantage of a variety of colors, emojis, and tags prior to posting!

7
Post Live Event Coverage

Yoga festivals and workshops are more common now than ever before. Every year, events like Wanderlust 108 unite thousands of yogis across the country. Countless others do the same on a local level. Share the energy and excitement of live events with your Followers on Instagram by creating a Story whenever you attend. Live event coverage has a twofold impact on your Instagram marketing efforts. In addition to sharing the experience with Followers who might not have been able to attend, it also demonstrates your commitment to learning from, and contributing to, the global yoga community.

ADDITIONAL TIPS AND TRICKS FOR AN AWESOME YOGI INSTAGRAM

Extra credit: Take advantage of the following tips and tricks to make your Instagram Stories stand apart from the crowd!

  • Use Boomerang to add some flare to your posts about postures. Think of postures that look pretty, fluid, or silly when transitioning in/out of them – e.g. balancing poses, arm balances, inversions. The magic of Boomerang will effortlessly transform those postures into fun and share-worthy GIFs.
  • Invest in a tripod & Bluetooth remote to shoot live video when you don’t have a partner. Building online relationships is time consuming, so you never want to risk those connections growing cold because you don’t have the extra hands to create awesome content.
  • Tag fellow instructors and students in your videos to increase visibility and reach. Use discretion, however. If you tag a student, make sure you have a good relationship and they agree it’s okay.
  • Review, record & improve. After 48 hours, check to see who viewed your Instagram Story. In a separate document (like Sheets or Excel), log the video topic, format, and viewership statistics. Every month, look back over your data to better understand which themes resonate most with your audience. Use this insight to develop more content that students like, and watch your engagement metrics steadily grow!

We’ve experienced that deep, peaceful quiet in Shavasana after an invigorating Yoga class. Now, how about a Yoga class that reduces your stress, lowers your blood pressure and most importantly releases endorphins? You get all of that, along with the added benefits of yoga, in the practice of Laughter Yoga.

Laughter Yoga was first developed in the mid-1990s by Indian physician, Madan Kataria. The practice is based on the fact that voluntary laughter can provide the same effect as a spontaneous laugh; and ever since, the practice has become widespread all over the world.

In research carried out at Isfahan University of Medical Sciences, Iran, on the effect of Laughter Yoga on the general health of nursing students, the results showed that there was a significant positive difference in the general health of the participants. They experienced improvements in signs of physical and sleep disorders, lower anxiety and depression, and a better social function.

The Kyungpook National University Hospital, Korea, also looked at the effects of laughter therapy on depression, cognition and sleep among the elderly living in the community. The result revealed that laughter therapy had a positive effect on depression, insomnia, and sleep quality in the elderly.

These studies have therefore shown that adopting laughter as a form of exercise can be highly beneficial.

How does Laughter Yoga Work?

The sessions in this form of Yoga are initiated by a form of warm up with participants engaging in clapping, youthful playfulness, jokes and so on. The essence is to make the participants relax and get in the mood.

This form of Yoga combines breathing exercises with laughter to relax the bodies and minds of participants. When you take deep breaths, it calms your body and with a calm body lies a calm mind. It is impossible to be physically relaxed and stressed up mentally. The two parts work in unison. A calm body and mind are open and ready to receive happiness, which is triggered by voluntary laughter.

What are the benefits of Laughter Yoga?

There are several areas of our lives that can be transformed via laughter therapy. These include our health, personal life, business life, as well as social life. Here are the top 5 benefits of Laughter Yoga:

1
Mood Elevation

Laughter stimulates the brain cells to release endorphins hormone, which puts you in a good mood that will leave you feeling cheerful and happy all day long. This is particularly important for those who suffer depression and need to lift up their spirit.

2
Health Improvement

Laughter has been linked with stress reduction and strong immune system. Someone who has a strong immune system will not fall sick easily, and even if they do, the rate of recovery is very fast.

3
Business Transformation

Laughter exercises increase the oxygen supply to the brain. The brain requires 25% more oxygen for optimal functioning. A well-oxygenated body and brain have the ability to perform better and more efficiently, which will lead to better results in your business.

4
Social Benefits.

Laughter creates an aura of happiness and friendship, leading to better relationships and a higher quality of life. A happy person can easily connect with new friends and forge new positive relationships.

5
Laughing in the Face of Challenges.

When things are going on well, you would naturally have a reason to laugh, but when things turn around, and life presents you with difficult challenges, you should be able to laugh it off as well. Laughter Yoga will train you for this and help you stay optimistic when faced with any challenging circumstances.

Anyone can benefit from Laughter Yoga: from seniors under care, to people with depression, anxiety and other health issues as well other adults in the populace. There are also laughter yoga clubs around that you can join to start your journey to a happy and more fulfilling life. Get started with Laughter Yoga today and it will be the best thing you have ever done.

We live in a brave new yoga world. From the heights of anti-gravity hammocks to the boga yoga floating studios, some 40 million Americans are practicing yoga in ways that will just not believe –on a horse, in a kennel at the beer garden  – really? Talk about yoga off the mat! Even Jackie Chan is in on the action with a new film called, Kung Fu Yoga! Yes, yogis, the latest offerings for concept yoga styles are as varied as our diverse lifestyles. Below is a guide to seven of the new quirkiest yoga styles with details on what to expect, where you can find them and if you are really adventurous how to train for teaching them.

Horseback yoga: The Lone Ranger and Tonto have nothing on equestrian yogis. Horseback yogis practice standing balances, backbends and twists from the back of a horse (hopefully standing still). No horsing around, this style yoga is said to improve balance, flexibility and holistic union with your horse.

Specialist teacher training priced at $1,555 and upward is available at com/teacher-training–programs.html .

Yoga & Kitties class: Looking to purrfect your Purrior II pose? Strut on down to the Meow Parlour, located on Hester Street NYC. Yoga and kitties classes are 75 minutes and include 30 minutes of playtime, 45 minutes of Vinyasa Flow yoga and 15 minutes cool down with kitty time.  The $22 class price includes a mat and access to the adorable yoga kitties, all of whom are available for adoption. Because some yog kitties can be catty – no personal pets are allowed in class. You might also want to leave your mat at home too as yoga kitties just love a good scratch.

No specialist teacher training is required, just an RYT and love of all things feline. Turtle Flow Yoga in LA offers similar sessions.

Doga: Do dogs have karma? Kari Harendorf owner of East Yoga in New York City and star of Animal Planet’s K9 Karma believes they do. East Yoga is one of the first studios to offer doga: a partner yoga class that people do with their dogs. To downward dog with the canine masters, nee inventors of that delicious back stretch, see Arizona Yoga (Scottsdale, Ariz). Barking Buddha Doga, (Seattle, Wash) Bideawee Animal Shelter (Long Island & NYC), Doga Dog (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) East Yoga, (New York City) or Wiggles ‘n’ Wags (Lombard, Ill.)  Most doga classes run about $15-25.

In addition to an RYT yoga certification, dog training and/or animal handler qualifications are highly recommended.

Broga: Broga is “a yoga-based fitness program taught from a man’s point of view”. Strickly sweaty yoga classes for guys who are fed up with pretty lady yoga. According to the website, Brograms are “geared for men (where it’s okay if you can’t touch your toes)”.  The fine print also adds, that means no chanting, binding or fancy yoga pants. Broga’s mission “to get more men practicing yoga”. Broga provide their own teacher training programs online and face-to-face.

See brogayoga.com/get-certified. Similar programs include Jock Yoga and Yoga for Men.

Beer Yoga: Get your Budda Belly on yogis! Beer yoga, the latest craze to hail from down under is gaining popularity around the world from New York breweries to the Burning Man Festival in the Nevada desert. sweeping across the world with events in Berlin, NYC and Nevada. Absolutely no yoga experience required. If you can stand on one leg and hold a bottle of beer over your head for 5 breaths, you’re good to go.  Standing beer yoga poses include beer salutations – holding your beer in the air while lunging forward, beer bottle tree pose –holding tree pose whilst balancing a bottle of beer on your head, giving gratitude to beer pose – take first appreciative sip!  After the first bottle, I’m assuming the sequence moves to seated beer pose or late night facedown asana. If this sounds like your idea of enlightenment, it’s time to get the party started. BYOB yourself down to the beer yoga garden.

Ganja Yoga: Ganja yoga has its “grass” roots in the ancient hippie-yogi traditions of the nineteen sixties. Though many of the original practices have been lost over the decades, the art of sitting cross-legged and inhaling is experiencing something of a California revival thanks to Dee Dussault, founder of Ganja Yoga.  The “unique fusion of ganja and yoga”, is described on her webpage as “less physically intense, but more relaxing than most yoga styles”.  Brazilian Yoga and 420 Remedy.  Offer similar yoga classes.  All are L.A. based, where the rules on ganja are more relaxed than most cities. Still, they advise yogis to smoke before you come.

Instructors are yoga certified, but there are is currently no “official” teacher training programs being offered.

Laugha Yoga: LOL, laugha yoga is no laughing matter. Seriously, if this article hasn’t already given you the giggles, yoga teacher, then you need a course in Laugha yoga.  The three day Yoga leader Certification is taught by Bharata Wingham, E-RYT 200, CLYT concept is described as “a fun way to awaken yourself and others” Laugha Yoga techniques include Laugha Nidra (deep relaxation followed by laughter) and Pranayama. I am guessing that is teaching people how to catch their breath when trying not to laugh too hard.

Laugh Yoga

If all else fails, you can read this blog to your fellow teachers as a form of laughter therapy or as to brainstorm some new marketing ideas. When you really think about it, even the quirkiest yoga styles are a testament to creative yogapreneurship.  There are so many more styles; I haven’t even touched on, such as karaoke yoga (sing your way through the asanas), nude yoga (in the buff), tantrum yoga (scream and stretch) and every possible variation and combination of styles from warm vinyasa to fusion yoga (mixes Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Iyengar styles). Maybe, these is the right time to dub-step out of your comfort zone and throw a yoga rave or just have more fun.

Let’s face it guys, the images adorning popular consumer magazines depicting yoga models dressed in designer apparel posing elegantly is a stereotype and a false one at that. Yoga is not just for pretty girls. Real men can and do practice yoga.

In fact, the 2016 Yoga in America survey, found that men account for 30% of the nearly 30 million Americans taking yoga classes. That’s 10 million and counting. Of course, this should not come as a surprise to anyone familiar with the history of yoga.

The ancient Vedic yogis were without exception, men. They practiced chanting, meditation and alchemy in secret ceremonies. Rituals and chants were passed from master to student. Women were rarely included. If truth be told, the feminisation of yoga is a contemporary invention, bearing little resemblance to the actual history of yoga. One of the earliest sacred yoga texts called The Yoga Sutras was written by Patanjali, commonly known as the father of modern yoga. His epic poems dating back to 400 CE include stories of war and heroism that would not be out of place in a Hollywood action hero movie. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika on the other hand written sometime later in the 15 th century was authored by Svatmarama, a yogi Master who put Sanskrit to papyrus to explain the fundamental principles and practices of yoga in the day. These include illustrations of the 12 fundamental yoga poses underpinning every postural yoga styles including Ashtanga, Iyengar and Bikram styles (all named after the men who popularised them).

More recent examples of celebrity yoga teachers include Rodney Yee, Russell Simmons, Jason Campbell and Baron Baptiste. Yee and Campbell are regularly featured in Yoga Journal. Men’s Health and Men’s Fitness have also begun to take notice, running features on the benefits of men’s yoga. Baron Baptiste, former coach with the Philadelphia Eagles and founder of Baptiste Power Yoga, in a recent interview with Men’s Fitness, described yoga as a full body work-out with four key benefits for men including building muscle, flexibility, energy and relaxation. These are detailed below:

1
Building Muscle:

A strong vinyasa or power yoga class provides challenges equal to that of body building or cross fit training. These classes emphasise poses that use the same groups of muscles used in push-ups and squats. Most will mix it up with arm balances to increase upper body strength, toning and sculpting arms and back muscles at the same time.

2
Improving Flexibility

In yoga, the pelvis is the central pivot for extreme bending of the legs, spine and torso. Most men are tight in the hips, hamstrings and shoulders. This is especially true for those who spend long hours seated at computers. A regular yoga practice enables a larger range of motion and joint play with poses that open joints and gently stretch tendons. This helps to reduce injury to those vulnerable areas.

3
De-stressing and relaxing

Yoga is a stress management tool: When practicing yoga, you are literally unwinding taut muscles releasing emotional tension and easing tightness in the body. In turn the body begins producing more endorphins, natural opiates that relieve stress and boost your mood. Recent medical and scientific studies have also reported that a regular yoga practice lowers the levels of cortisol; the stress hormone that contributes to belly fat.

4
Increasing energy levels:

A regular yoga practice boosts cardio vascular, respiratory and digestive system; prevents injures. Exercise boosts the levels of oxygen and nutrients going to your tissues, fuelling the burning of oxygen and glucose that produces energy and powers every muscle movement. Most people breathe tooshallowly. Yoga breathing techniques helps to improve respiration, enhancing lung capacity and stimulating calmness in mind and body.

If you are new to yoga, it is best to take a class at your local gym or fitness centre. These classes are aimed at fitness enthusiasts, typically men who have never practiced yoga. These classes will have an athletic emphasis and male-centric approach. Though most yoga studios will aim to cater for all levels and body types, 70% of their cliental are women. So try to book into a class with a male yoga teacher, or better yet try one of the new online yoga classes for men such as yogaformen.com, brogayoga.com and manflowyoga.com

Power of Positivity (POP) recently ran a film project on social media that featured the responses of young people to the statement, ‘You are beautiful’. Each teen, without exception, reacted with a smile. The project is notable for its message of positivity, its practices of diversity (participants represented a diverse range of racial, cultural and ethnic groups) and its purpose (to focus on the good in the world, to help people find the good in themselves and to generate more good in the world)

As yoga teachers, we encounter people from all walks of life, sexual, gender and cultural/racial identities, in much more intimate circumstances than social media. This puts us in a unique position to promote positivity and generate good thoughts in our classes and communities. Recent statistics estimate that 80% of all American women suffer from body dissatisfaction. Body dissatisfaction is a subjective and negative view of one’s body shape, size and muscular structure (Grogan 2008). Body dissatisfaction is associated with low self-esteem and body image (the view people have of their bodies) Often this is tied up with unrealistic ideals and media stereotypes. It is estimated that eighty-one percent of fourth grade girls are afraid of getting fat.

Body image advocates such as Melanie Klein and Anna Guest-Jelley believe the transformative benefits of yoga can empower, leading  to improved body image. This is supported by researcher Sara Elysia Clancy at Washington State University who measured participants’ responses to body image questions before and after a ten week yoga treatment. Class themes included, Acceptance, Awareness and Spirituality, Mind- Body Connection, Body Compassion, Mindfulness of the self, and Physical and Functional Body. The results showed a significant improvement in body satisfaction.

Positive Body Image – Living a richer life by loving the body you are in.

To begin incorporating some of these techniques into your own practice, teaching and training begin with a short dharma talk on body image.  Don’t be afraid to open the conversation out to students and clients with a few humorous examples such as ‘Does my butt look big in these yoga pants’ or ‘Why don’t I look like Shiva Rhea in that pose?’ Whatever your approach, carry it through the practice with affirmations, mantras and resolves such as ‘I feel alive in my body’, ‘I express myself in my body’, ‘I feel comfortable in my body’.  Positive reinforcement works to generate good feelings.

The practice of diversity is another important demonstration of your values that will empower your students with confidence. Include classes for yoga with curves and impaired on your timetables. Be certain that your promotional materials, brochures, website include images of diverse body shapes, colours and sizes.  Use positive praise and mindfulness throughout the practice. Remind students to humour their bodies, practicing ahimsa (non-violence) towards their own bodies as well as others. Try an inspired mantra such as ‘Yoga is for every body’s body’ and tell them they look ‘beautiful’.

Lastly, but not least, promote a mindful practice of awareness, acceptance and compassion. I once attended a class, with an instructor who spoke about the wisdom of her knees and the ‘issues in her tissue’.  Yoga is a somatic therapy for healing trauma and injuries in both mind and body.  Releasing tension into the lower back for example, helps to relieve anxiety and stress.  Reinforce yoga breathing exercises with visualisations such as ‘inhale let and  ‘exhale go’. To carry that through the practice, remind students to inhale into the muscle stretch and exhale with its release. Finish the practice with a yoga nidra relaxation sequence, checking it with the body after practice and taking notice of the positive changes taking place.

“Yoga is the journey of the Self, through the Self, to the Self.” – The Bhagavad Gita.

The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “yuj”, meaning “unite” or “yoke”.  So whether on the mat as we yoga, unite or yoke, with the Self or off the mat where we yoga, unite or yoke, with another human being the end goal is the same, achieving optimal alignment with your truth within the body and mind. Yoga2Life coaching is where the marriage begins. It’s where you are handed a road mat to unleash your true potentiality to honor your soul and the souls around you by helping cultivate true moments of co-creativeness and seeking truth within the Self.

Now, there are more then five ways that Yoga 2 Life Coaching has rocked my world, but for the moment we’ll start with the following five…

1
Alignment

“Body is the bow. Asana is the arrow. Soul is the target.” – B.K.S. Iyengar

Aligning with your self truth is achieving optimal alignment in the body and mind, on and off the mat. In yoga we align in postures. Some guides call postures ‘situations’. Some postures or situations we love and other we do not, some are easy and put our body in a bliss full relaxed state and others push us into discomfort where we begin to sweat, fight, feel blockages, and experience dis-ease within the body. Through achieving optimal alignment we learn much about ourselves and how we deal with our current ‘situations.’ How we deal with our sweat is how we deal with life.  In coaching we align with our goals- ah, yes the mental struggle, where the ‘real work begins’, by which we need to design the creative space, the road map, by building an agenda with intention. We begin to align with our intention and whether we’re speaking about yoga or coaching it is your focus. Its what guides you, what you expand on and what you grow from, and where ‘ah-ha’ moments come from. Aligning with true intention on or off the mat fuels action and action leads to change. Optimal Alignment is an inside out process.

Energy flows where attention goes, right? Then aligning with the right intention, with the right goals, with the right energy is vital to manifest your outcome, your ah-ha moment.

2
Active Listening

“The quieter you become, the more you can hear.” – Baba Ram Dass.

Listening is the cornerstone of coaching, and yoga. Powerful, deep listening informs your yoga and coaching process. Yoga is a constant conversation between body and mind, but in order to converse with the Self we must listen to the Self first, deeply listen. Through active or deep listening in coaching we begin see more then we hear. Listening to what the client is saying and not saying. What are you really saying? What is the body really telling you? What are you truly understanding and learning through each asana, ‘situation’. Active listening is the most powerful and profound gift anyone can give to the Self or to an another human being- the gift of being heard, fully understood.

How you do anything is how you do everything.

3
Intuition

“There is a voice that doesn’t use words. Listen.” – Rumi.

Yoga cultivates your intuition abilities. The ability of intuition is innate however, most of us I dare say need to tune into our intuition a bit more. I have discovered that over the course of 3 months through Yoga2Life tuning my intuition was hands down a rocking moment and a moment I had not expected to come from coaching. When in yoga we cleanse the body through movement we twist and bend and sweat and pretzel and svasana to not only strengthen the body, let go of the past, become present, or whatever mantra you have brought to class in your pocket but to also cultivate intuition. Intuition is a powerful tool and what guides coaches and yogis alike. Check in with your ‘gut’ once in a while on what is right or wrong through our daily lives. Through yoga we learn to ‘hush’ the voices of others, the comments, opinions, thoughts so we can begin to turn inward and discover answers from within. In coaching we guide a fellow being to find this experience to turn inward to tap into their ‘gut’ to help them discover their perfect outcome. Intuition is our intelligence.

4
Empowerment

One part of a yoga practice is to learn to stand strong and to build strength. We know that our physiology can directly affect our psychology. With that said, when we learn to stand strong in our warrior poses, we are more empowered to stand strong and face whatever obstacles are in our path.

Coaching is all about empowerment! The skills a coach learns help to highlight how a person does one thing in their life probably is indicative of how they do other things in their life. For instance, do you shrink back from change? Or do you take a deep breath and step into the flow?

A coach believes that everything their client needs is within their client. A coach helps direct a clients attention back to what is within his or her influence. It’s empowering to make a choice to take a step forward, more empowering than someone telling you what to do.

In yoga, the teacher doesn’t DO the postures for the student, the student does the work. In coaching, the coach is there as a guide. The coach doesn’t create the path, the client does. Now that’s empowering!

5
Transitions

Have you ever heard that the transitions are just as important as the postures themselves? It’s true! Transitions are hard. It takes more awareness to transition from one posture to the next while staying in optimal alignment. Often times, we flow through the transitions mindlessly and instead focus on the final posture. However, transitions, when done correctly, in yoga, help us to build strength for the more advanced postures. Transitions help us to be more present and to tap into our breath and to calm the nervous system. Transitions are a time to remember, reconnect and realign…. If only we didn’t rush through them.

A coach helps a client mindfully move through transitions in life. In coaching, how a person transitions from A to B is just as important as achieving an end goal. When a person is moving through a transition in their life, they are able to choose which direction to take, which path to take, and slowing down, taking some time to do some self inquiry gives a client the space to navigate through life’s transitions.

‘I sought serenity and all I got was this lousy tote bag’ is the working title for a new artwork that comments on the extent to which yoga is all about selling people stuff.

The piece by artist and Yogi Aurel Schmidt, features a strange mutation of Santa Claus and Lakshmi (Hindi goddess of wealth and prosperity). Santa, cap jauntily cocked to the side and winking is morphed onto the body of Lakshmi, arms held in mudra and seated in half-lotus, on the back of giant pink flamingo, a serpent entwined around its standing leg.

The figure, inspired by the artist’s experience of a yoga studio – where classes ended with a closing ‘OM’ chant, and a sales pitch for their ‘spiritual tote bags’ – should represent an alarm bell for all yogaprenuers.

This month, I have been offered everything from strip mall yoga groupons to $10 off on Yoga Christmas calendars – yikes – was that a promos for the infamous  #yogiselfie.  The offer for the Christmas yoga mats, while tempting, really made me feel compromised.

The extent to which yoga has become commercialised and westernised is also the subject of an internet television series called ‘Namaste Bitches’.  The show parodies the many contradictions of the yoga business. For example, in one episode, the studio owner applauds a yoga teacher who tears up the promo-leaflet for a studio of a rival studio.  Of course, what else can a yogi do but laugh at the absurd and tragic nature of a job that values abhyasa (nonattachment to outcome) in the same breath as entrepreneurism.

Let’s be real.  Yoga is a $5.7 billion business.  What’s more, yoga paraphernalia makes up more 70% of the income gained by most yoga studio or businesses.  Let’s face it, this is the means by which many yoga teachers and studios survive.  Still, there must be a better way to market essential oils and yoga pants, than the creepy  ‘yoga inspired retail’, ‘eco chic’ ‘extend the yoga experience’ style of adverts that make their way into my inbox, via the green tab.

Yoga’s new consumer identity crisis is the subject a new book by Andrea Jain, The Selling of Yoga: From Counter Culture to Pop Culture. In it, Jain considers the diffusion of yoga from a ‘spiritual tradition’ to a ‘commodity’ in the pop culture marketplace.  As the love child of a mid-western American and a Hindi (of the Jain Yogi tradition), Jain is well placed to take on the debate, but she stops just short of taking a side.

Strip mall yoga for all its faults, is where Jain and some twenty million other Americans practice and teach yoga.  That the type of yoga practiced is postural rather than spiritual or lifestyle rather than religious is a non-starter.   For those who practice yoga, issues of authenticity versus commodity do not exist.
